What are reading logs?

Learn what reading logs are in Gearbelt and how they track asset usage over time to support maintenance scheduling and compliance.

Written by Tammy Slattery

Reading logs are a sequential record of usage readings captured against an asset in Gearbelt — values such as engine hours, kilometres, or mileage. Each entry stores a value, unit, and timestamp, building a running history of how an asset is being used over time.

Definition

A reading log is a timestamped record of a measured value captured against an asset at a specific point in time. Reading logs are stored against the asset and accumulate over time to form a usage history.

What reading logs are used for

Reading logs are used to:

  • Track asset usage over time, such as engine hours after each shift or kilometres travelled per day

  • Trigger maintenance schedule intervals based on usage thresholds

  • Provide an audit trail of readings for compliance and reporting

Where to view reading logs

You can view reading logs for an asset from:

  • Gearbelt Web — go to the asset profile and select the Reading Logs tab

  • Gearbelt Mobile Web — open the asset and select Reading logs to browse, search, filter by unit, and view individual reading details
