How Does Storm Process Documents in AI Form Fill?

Learn how to attach documents to AI Form Fill and how Storm extracts and uses their content to fill your form.

Written by Nina Yang

Storm's AI Form Fill supports document attachment via the paperclip button in the AI Form Fill canvas. When you attach a document, Storm extracts the text and uses it to fill relevant form fields — the same way it processes voice recordings and photos.

This is useful when you have existing records, dockets, spreadsheets, or email chains you want Storm to read without re-typing or re-recording the information.

Note: Document attachment is currently in beta and available on Dashpivot Web only. Dashpivot Mobile and Sitemate Mobile support is coming soon.

Supported File Types

File Type

What Storm Does

PDF

Extracts text from the document. For scanned PDFs, Storm uses OCR to read the content.

DOCX

Extracts text from Word documents, including headings and body content.

XLSX

Reads cell values from spreadsheet columns and rows.

CSV

Reads structured row and column data.

EML

Reads the email body and any text-based attachments within the email.

How to Attach a Document

  1. Open a form. The Storm AI Form Fill canvas appears at the bottom of the form.

  2. Click the paperclip icon in the canvas toolbar (marked Beta).

  3. Select the document file from your device.

  4. Add any voice recording, photos, or typed notes as usual.

  5. Click Fill. Storm will extract text from the document and use it alongside your other inputs to fill the form.

Files Already Attached to the Form

If a file has already been attached to a form field, Storm can read it as extra context without you needing to re-upload it. To use this, instruct Storm in your typed notes or voice recording — for example: "Use the attached docket to fill in the plant details." Storm will locate the attached file and extract the relevant content.

OCR for Scanned PDFs

For scanned PDFs, Storm uses OCR (optical character recognition) to read the document content. For best results:

  • Ensure the scan is clear and not heavily skewed or rotated

  • Avoid low-contrast scans or documents with heavy watermarks over text

  • One document per file produces the most reliable extraction

Tips for Best Results

  • Attach one document at a time where possible — focused, single-subject documents produce more accurate extractions than multi-page mixed-content files

  • Combine with a typed instruction to guide Storm — for example: "Use the attached delivery docket to fill in the plant register table"

  • For email chains (EML), Storm reads the full email body and text attachments. Forward the most relevant email rather than a long chain where possible

  • For spreadsheets (XLSX/CSV), Storm reads cell values but does not interpret formulas — make sure the data you need is visible as plain values in the file

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I attach more than one document at a time?
You can attach multiple documents in the same AI Form Fill session. For best results, keep each document focused on a single subject so Storm can accurately map the content to the right form fields.

Does document attachment work offline?
No. Document attachment requires an active internet connection, the same as all AI Form Fill processing on Dashpivot Web.

What happens if Storm can't read my PDF?
If a scanned PDF is low quality or heavily distorted, Storm may not be able to extract all text via OCR. In this case, Storm will notify you that the file could not be processed. Try re-scanning the document at a higher resolution or in better lighting.

Does Storm store or use my attached documents to train AI models?
No. Storm does not use documents or any other inputs submitted through AI Form Fill to train AI models.
