How to Markup Photos on Dashpivot Mobile App

Learn how to annotate or draw on photos you capture in the Dashpivot mobile app.

Written by Nina Yang

Photo markups in the Dashpivot app let you annotate photos with freehand drawing, shapes, and text. Point to exactly what matters — add lines, arrows, rectangles, circles, and text directly on a photo, or use the translucent highlighter to call out an area without hiding it. Any markup can be moved, resized, rotated, recoloured, or deleted before saving.

Prerequisites

Before you begin make sure you have the following:

  • Plan: Standard

  • Permission: Access to capture and edit photos

  • Skills Required: Dashpivot

  • Device Type: Mobile device

  • Subscription: Dashpivot

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open the Dashpivot app on your mobile device.

  2. Tap the camera icon to take a photo within a form or record.

  3. Capture the photo — the markup screen opens automatically.

  4. Use the toolbar at the bottom to select your markup tool:

    • Pen — draws opaque freehand strokes (selected by default)

    • Highlighter — draws translucent strokes to call out an area without hiding it

    • Shapes — tap to choose from line, arrow, double arrow, rectangle, circle, or text

    • Colour — choose from 9 colours

    • Stroke width — choose from 5 thickness options

    • Undo — steps back one change at a time

  5. To draw freehand, select Pen or Highlighter and draw directly on the photo with your finger.

  6. To add a shape or text, tap the Shapes icon and select a shape. It appears centred on the canvas — tap it to select, then drag to move it, drag the handles to resize, or use the rotate handle to rotate.

  7. To snap a freehand stroke into a clean shape, draw a line, rectangle, or circle in one stroke and hold still for a moment — it automatically converts to a clean, editable shape.

  8. To change a shape's colour or stroke width after placing it, tap the shape to select it, then tap Colour or Stroke Width in the toolbar.

  9. To delete a shape or text object, select it and tap the bin icon, or drag the object onto the bin.

  10. Tap Undo to step back through changes one at a time.

  11. Tap Done when you are happy with the markup.

  12. Tap Next to continue.

  13. Add a description and any relevant tags.

  14. Tap Save to upload the photo.

Notes

  • You can only mark up photos taken using the Dashpivot app. Photos uploaded from your device gallery cannot be marked up.

  • Text objects cannot be made translucent — the highlighter toggle applies to shapes only.

  • There is no clear-all option. Use Undo repeatedly to remove all markups, or tap Cancel to discard all changes (you will be asked to confirm before markup is lost).
